Beginner's Guide To Keeping Natural Hair

Posted by Main Admin on

The thought of going back to natural can be daunting. First it comes as a passing thought and then the urge to do it keeps growing. But then, fear starts to grip you as tons of questions flood in. Do I transition or big chop? Will it suit my face? What will my friends say? How will I manage it?

It is normal to go through all these stages. We're here today to alleviate some of these fears by taking you through some tips on keeping natural hair. Stay with us!

Big chop or transition?

Some people want a fresh start. They want to cut off all their permed hair and start growing their natural from scratch. That's one way to go. This way you can rock fierce short natural hair styles.

Others like to slowly ease into their natural hair journey. This way you can wait till you are comfortable with your natural hair length before cutting off your permed hair. The choice of going for a big chop or transitioning is more of a personal one. Ultimately, do what works for you. Don't let anyone pressurize you into making a decision. Take your time and own it.

Gosh! What products do I use?

There are currently a lot of natural hair products on the market so we now have a lot of options. Find the products that work best for you. Ideally, products with no sulfates, mineral oil, petrolatum, etc. are the great for natural hair. Unlike permed hair, natural hair gets dry very fast. This is why you need to use water-based products that add moisture to your hair. No need to look far off. The Eya Naturals Essentials Set provides all the essentials you need for your hair and can be used if you're a newbie or veteran naturalista.

I can't comb my hair

We're so used to combing our permed hair that we often feel natural hair should be easily manipulated like that too. Well we have some good news for you: you don't need to comb your natural hair on a daily basis. Don't get us wrong though, natural hair tangles up a lot. This is why it's important to detangle first with your hand or a wide-tooth comb. Before you even think of combing, make sure your hair is properly moisturized and detangled.

Moisture! Moisture!! Moisture!!!

As natural hair gets dry quickly, moisturizing should be part of your regimen. Applying oil to your hair is not the same as moisturizing. Think of water or water-based products when you think of moisturizing. Spray a little water or water-based hair mist on your hair to make it damp, apply your leave-in-lotion   and seal in the moisture with shea butter and your preferred hair oil. You can carry along the Aloe Vera Hair Mist from Eya Naturals in your purse and spray a bit on your hair if it becomes too dry.

Styling is not a problem

How do I wear my hair? My face is too round, it won't fit my head type. There are a lot of short natural hair styles you can absolutely rock. Comb twists, micro twists, foam curls, twists, braids, the list is endless. Explore your options.

Find a natural hair salon

Start on a good note. If you are not up to taking care of your hair yourself like most of us, find a good natural hair salon where your hair can be properly managed. The techniques of taking care of permed hair and natural hair are different. Proper hair management leads to healthy hair. You can visit any of our salon branches to have your hair pampered. Our main branch is off the Spintex Road behind the Kingdom Bookshop (+233 275 000 009). And our North Kaneshie Salon is opposite St. Theresa's School, (+233 552 277 854).

Hair regimen

Undoubtedly, there are a lot of natural hair regimen examples online. The good thing is that you can experiment and find which regimen works best for you. You may need to wash your hair every two weeks, but someone else may need to do that every week. You may need to moisturize daily, someone may just need to moisturize every other day. Do what works best for YOUR hair, not what works for some one else. In all that though remember moisture is your friend. Always incorporate moisturizing into your hair care regimen.

Embarking on the natural hair journey should be fun and we want you to enjoy every stage of it. For further hair consultation, please contact +233 204 600 464 or @eyanaturals on Facebook and Instagram.
